It’s that time of the year again, for New Year’s resolutions. I called my 2023 resolution “50 for 50.” I turned 50 this year and was determined to complete 50 hikes. I stopped counting after 30 and will probably end up with around 40. Not bad. This was one of my favorites, the “Tower Hike” in Cologne. My 2024 resolutions: TBD. 51 for 51? Something metaphysical happens when you turn 50, besides an uptick in AARP offers. Resolutions become important, so in the remaining days of 2023, I plan to take just a bit more care in developing mine for 2024.
My unsolicited advice: you should not have more than a few resolutions, each should be easily measurable and generally within your control, and you should appoint someone to keep you accountable. Here are some ideas: join and become an active participant in a professional bar association (e.g., the IP Section of the California Lawyers Association, which I chair), earn a privacy certification (e.g., CIPP/US), join a book club or a hiking club (and participate regularly), join a non-profit board or become actively involved in a community organization, write an article on a legal (or other) topic of interest, give a webinar, etc. Each, of course, will need to be meaningful to you; otherwise, there is little chance that it will get done. Good luck!
