California Dreaming

It's been a while since I posted. In fact, this may be the first one this year. This is hike #11 this year for the Peninsula Hiking Club, founded in 2021, by yours truly. January is always Mission Peak; May, the Dipsea Trail; October, Purisima Creek Redwoods Preserve; December, El Clasico - Lands End, to … Continue reading California Dreaming

Peninsula Hiking Club Year in Review (2024)

It's that time of year. To reflect, to appreciate the trails hiked, old friends, and new connections. I started the Peninsula Hiking Club (PHC) in June 2021, not at the height of the pandemic, but certainly not too far away. We (to be more precise, two of us), hiked Montara Mountain, a 7-mile out and … Continue reading Peninsula Hiking Club Year in Review (2024)

Montana Mountain – November 2024

Some November mornings along the coast in Northern California are crystal clear; this one, not so much. It had been a long week, and I would have probably preferred to stay in bed. But, the hike was on the calendar, and cancelling a hike last minute was not really an option. Some days you just … Continue reading Montana Mountain – November 2024

Purisima Creek Redwood OSP – October 2024

We hiked this last September, and I'm quite sure that this fallen tree, on Craig Britton Trail, was not there. Besides that, the hike, a 10-mile loop, was as I remembered it, one of the best intermediate hikes in the San Francisco Bay Area. Park in the North Ridge lot, off Skyline, hike down North … Continue reading Purisima Creek Redwood OSP – October 2024

The Westweg

This is a classic hiking route through Germany’s Black Forest. Traveling through the area, I could not resist. This was etappe (stage) 10, through the Feldberg. The Westweg is over 280 km long. This day I covered only a few. More work to be done.

Hiking Stuttgart

This was a surprise. The city itself is in a valley, with hills to climb seemingly in all directions. A brisk morning hike up to the Tea House in Weissenburg Park was the perfect antidote for the jet lag from the previous day. A work out at CrossFit Stuttgart, a little later that morning, did … Continue reading Hiking Stuttgart

Hiking the Bavarian Alps

Day one: Oberstdorf, Germany [900 meters] to Rappensee Hutte [2,100 meters] Day two: Rappensee Hutte down to 1,500 meters and back up to 2,100 meters (Mindelheimer Hutte) Day three: summit climb (2,370 meters), then down to Mittelberg, Austria (1,200 meters). Epic 3 days in late September. Challenging, but in the words of our hiking leader, … Continue reading Hiking the Bavarian Alps

San Francisco Crosstown Trail – 2024

This time, we did it from east to west, from Candlestick Point to Lands' End, and for a few of us, bonus steps, for a total of 31,000, to Beach Chalet, for an ice cold V.F.W. blonde ale. Not bad for a Saturday. Last year, we hike west to east. Always good to mix it … Continue reading San Francisco Crosstown Trail – 2024
